The Durham County Detention Facility houses individuals who have been arrested by local law enforcement agencies and those serving their sentence. The facility can hold up to 736 inmates. The first two levels are used for the various offices and services of the facility such as laundry, facility maintenance, food service, central control, criminal magistrates, and intake/release. The remaining three levels are used for inmate housing.

How to Send Mail or Package

Inmates at the Durham County Detention Facility may receive general correspondence from family members and friends. All incoming mail are inspected for contraband. Make sure to include your complete name and return address. When sending mail to an inmate, you must address it in the following manner:

Funds may be deposited into an inmate’s account using the Touchpay online service. You can also deposit money using the Touchpay kiosk located in the lobby of the facility or by phoning 1-866-232-1899. The inmate’s ID/JCA is required in order to make the deposit. Take note that you will get charged a service fee for using Touchpay. Family and friends can also make cash deposits using the Lobby Kiosk at no charge. Money orders and cashier’s checks will only be accepted if they are mailed to:

Visitation Hours

Due to health and safety concerns, in person and video visitation is suspended until further notice at the Durham County Detention Facility. However, family members and friends can still visit inmates online through the GTL website or app. All inmates get two free 10-minute internet video visits per week. The visitation schedule is as follows:

Pods 5A, 5C, 3CN:
Monday – 6pm to 7:30pm
Saturday – 10am to 12pm

Pods 5D, 4A, 4B:
Tuesday – 6pm to 7:30pm
Saturday – 5pm to 7pm

Pods 4D, 4C, 3B:
Wednesday – 6pm to 7:30pm
Sunday – 10am to 12pm

Pods 3CS, 3D, 5B:
Thursday – 6pm to 7:30pm
Sunday – 5pm to 7pm

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office maintains an online list of all the inmates currently housed in the detention center. The list is arranged alphabetically based on the inmates’ last names. Each inmate has a profile that contains his complete name, age, gender, race, and record details. These details include the inmate’s ID number, date of birth, custody status, and booking date.

The Durham County Sheriff’s Office is the main law enforcement agency in the county. It is responsible for providing various services to the communities under its jurisdiction. These include conducting patrols, animal services, investigating crimes, providing gun permits, serving warrants, and apprehending suspects. The Durham County Sheriff’s Office consists of the main office as well as two other stations – the North Station and the East Station. The head of the DCSO is Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead. He oversees the day-to-day operations of the entire agency.
